holocaust survivor funding

Jewish Family & Child receives funding from The Conference on Jewish Material Claims against Germany (Claims Conference), UJA Federation and donors in our community in order to provide financial assistance to Holocaust survivors living in the Greater Toronto Area.  We are extremely grateful to our funders for their commitment to, and understanding of, this vulnerable Jewish population.

In recent years, expansions have been made to the eligibility criteria for Claims Conference support.  We now assist people born in and around 1942, whose mother was pregnant when she was persecuted - as long as the applicant meets our income requirements.  These people are in their early seventies now, but as they age, their needs will inevitably increase.  This could translate into approximately twenty more years of entitled applicants needing our help.  In addition, people who fled Leningrad after June 1941 are now included in the Claims Conference definition of Nazi victims.  There are now more survivors than ever before in need of our emergency funding.  In fact, Toronto’s Jewish community is one of the only in the world whose Survivor population is increasing, not shrinking.  We are unique in our challenges as hundreds of thousands of Jews from the Former Soviet Union live in, or immigrate to, Toronto. This is among the fastest growing communities in Toronto, and they often sponsor their elderly parents, who are eligible survivors, to come here to live.  The FSU community is tightly knit, and within it, information about our services travels quickly by word-of-mouth.

Our current allocation has enabled us to provide medical devices/equipment and emergency assistance needed for daily living so that survivors may live with an added measure of dignity.

Assistance includes:
• Emergency rent to prevent eviction - rent high, not subsidized housing
• Emergency relocation
• Emergency medical & dental care not paid by government programs
• Certain medical products such as wheel chairs, special seating, beds, hearing aids, etc.
• Medically-related assistance such as air conditioner for emphysema patient
• Funds to prevent utility shut-off
